SCLA Boys: Player Float Rules

Towns with more than one team in a single division (Stars, Stripes or Open), but with less than 36 total registered players in that division, will be allowed to “float” 2 players between those teams to ensure a game time roster of 18 kids.  The intent should be to fill gaps in rosters; not to gain a competitive advantage.  If floating players are used, they will be annotated on the score sheet with an “F” next to their number.

The following guidelines will be followed when “floating” players:

  • In age-groups with Stars and Stripes Divisions, floating will be allowed from Stripes to Stars, from Stripes to Stripes, or from Stars to Stars.
  • Floating will be allowed among all teams in the U11, U13 and U15 age-conferences .
  • The “float” rule is modified during playoffs to ensure a game time roster of 16 players. (Float Rule continued next page)
  • If a club begins the season with 36 or more players in a division and sees its permanent roster diminish to less than 16 players, it may petition the SCLA to have the option to float players according to the aforementioned guidelines.
  • The Division Directors will periodically review the floating patterns and procedures to ensure that all programs are adhering to the intent of the rule.
  • No player may float more than two times during a season, including regular season, playoff and championship games.
